Unlike phone, however, there are no substantial numbers of VE's to be worked during the day on CW, and 40 meters changes from being primarily S&P into a big run band. These two factors worked against us, and despite a fantastic operating effort, we can do no better than third. Congrats to N2RM and W3LPL. USA M/M is a *very* competitive category! Band-by-band: 160: The way the band opened 2 hours before the contest, you knew it was going to be good, and it was still better than we dared to expect. Low noise level and low MUF translated into hearing and working everything. Highlights were working JA Saturday morning and UA9 Saturday night. Lowlight was hearing the SU2MT pile and not being able to touch it. 80: Is there anything that K3UA didn't work here? With the famous pot of coffee and the stack of vintage magazines nearby, Phil snagged some really good zones, missing only 12(!),18,22,23,24, 26, 28,37, and 39. Activity stretched beyond 3585. 40: Truly memorable propagation. Short path HS worked at 0000z. Bone-crushingly loud EU three hours before sunset. Direct path Asia very good both mornings, but couldn't CQ due because of QRM to 15 meter station. Band cratered out at 03-05 UTC both nights as MUF moved down. Could only listen as New England ran EU between 18-20 UTC. Stuck on 38 zones until second morning when K3LR's precision beam pointing netted a VU. 20: The band played very much like 15 meters used to. Had only 100 QSOs at sunrise (1200 UTC), but quickly racked up 726 more in the next five hours. Band pretty much gone to EU by 1830 or so. Surprising depth to the JA opening -- we worked just over 300 JA's. Band seemed wide open to UA9-0 almost around the clock, but didn't work as many as we did on SSB. 15: This band teased us, but never seemed to fully open, with shallow openings both mornings to EU, and very marginal JA on Sunday night only. Didn't work a UA until Sunday. Rate to DL/G was good while it lasted. 4S/HB9AMO was a thrill Sunday morning, but he was the only Asian we heard. 10: New recruit KA3JWJ earns the "iron a**" award. More effort per QSO here thn anywhere else. Kept passing stuff to 10, with very little success. Other Random Comments: I don't think we in US/VE appreciate how different the CQ WW must be in different parts of the world. CQ-ing on 40 meters at 1800z is a very interesting experience. Most EU just ignore us -- they are working what appears to be an intra-continental contest. Occasionally a Western EU station catches our call in the QRM and gives us a call. The cast of EU stations "sharing" our frequency contantly changes -- most of them are stations we need, but we are essentially invisible to them. Big improvements made in the W8/W9 portion of the packetcluster network netted a lot of good spots. Very solid connection to Illinois/Wisconsin/Minnesota. Wish we could have heard the JT you spotted on 20! Nice going, guys. Speaking of packet, is it time to mention what surely seems to be regular self-spotting by a few stations? I thought the proper place to solicit QSOs was on HF, not VHF/internet. Now its time to "ramp down" and get into the holiday season like normal people. Thanks to all for the QSOs, and congratulations and thanks to Tim for the use of his fine station. -- Pat WA8YVR BREAKDOWN QSO/mults K3LR CQ WORLD WIDE DX CONTEST Multi Multi HOUR 160 80 40 20 15 10 HR TOT CUM TOT 0 39/25 53/32 81/45 35/20 14/9 ..... 222/131 222/131 1 37/9 52/12 41/20 16/8 3/1 . 149/50 371/181 2 14/5 60/14 39/13 6/3 5/1 2/2 126/38 497/219 3 10/5 67/2 28/10 8/2 . . 113/19 610/238 4 18/7 50/5 58/6 10/9 . . 136/27 746/265 5 10/7 32/5 60/3 12/2 . . 114/17 860/282 6 5/0 54/4 69/5 4/2 . . 132/11 992/293 7 4/2 52/4 70/3 10/2 . . 136/11 1128/304 8 14/2 27/4 64/2 1/1 ..... ..... 106/9 1234/313 9 9/1 12/2 33/2 4/2 . . 58/7 1292/320 10 6/1 13/3 38/3 6/6 1/1 . 64/14 1356/334 11 2/1 10/2 18/6 45/23 7/6 . 82/38 1438/372 12 1/1 6/3 21/3 163/13 19/14 . 210/34 1648/406 13 . 2/0 24/1 159/10 128/19 3/3 316/33 1964/439 14 . . 2/0 166/12 94/18 6/3 268/33 2232/472 15 . . . 130/2 76/9 16/6 222/17 2454/489 16 ..... ..... ..... 108/7 42/5 11/7 161/19 2615/508 17 . . . 71/6 14/8 5/2 90/16 2705/524 18 . . 1/0 32/3 24/7 4/1 61/11 2766/535 19 . . 24/0 20/3 26/1 9/2 79/6 2845/541 20 . . 58/3 27/5 14/2 8/1 107/11 2952/552 21 . 6/2 61/3 49/3 7/2 1/0 124/10 3076/562 22 7/1 6/1 59/1 79/4 10/1 1/0 162/8 3238/570 23 8/3 8/1 50/2 87/1 2/1 4/0 159/8 3397/578 0 11/2 7/1 32/1 26/0 7/1 8/2 91/7 3488/585 1 13/2 12/2 24/0 18/0 3/0 2/0 72/4 3560/589 2 9/0 12/1 12/0 29/1 . 1/0 63/2 3623/591 3 13/0 25/3 9/0 2/0 1/0 . 50/3 3673/594 4 18/1 14/2 12/0 8/0 . . 52/3 3725/597 5 9/1 34/0 11/0 1/1 . . 55/2 3780/599 6 4/1 38/2 37/4 4/1 . . 83/8 3863/607 7 7/0 20/1 63/2 . . . 90/3 3953/610 8 8/0 15/1 79/0 2/1 ..... ..... 104/2 4057/612 9 3/0 10/0 69/0 1/0 . . 83/0 4140/612 10 5/0 5/1 40/0 3/0 . . 53/1 4193/613 11 3/0 5/1 19/1 21/0 1/0 . 49/2 4242/615 12 2/0 5/0 12/1 116/0 42/1 . 177/2 4419/617 13 . 1/0 10/2 96/3 111/4 3/0 221/9 4640/626 14 . . . 83/2 108/8 4/2 195/12 4835/638 15 . . . 78/0 65/3 3/0 146/3 4981/641 16 ..... ..... ..... 71/2 38/1 8/1 117/4 5098/645 17 . . . 50/0 12/2 8/1 70/3 5168/648 18 . . 4/0 10/1 6/0 2/0 22/1 5190/649 19 . . 30/1 15/1 11/1 5/0 61/3 5251/652 20 . . 37/0 13/0 10/0 6/0 66/0 5317/652 21 . 2/1 44/1 20/2 6/0 4/0 76/4 5393/656 22 5/0 6/1 38/0 35/0 11/1 . 95/2 5488/658 23 4/0 12/0 13/0 29/1 4/0 . 62/1 5550/659 DAY1 184/70 510/96 899/131 1248/149 486/105 70/27 ..... 3397/578 DAY2 114/7 223/17 595/13 731/16 436/22 54/6 . 2153/81 TOT 298/77 733/113 1494/144 1979/165 922/127 124/33 . 5550/659 Continent Statistics K3LR CQ WORLD WIDE DX CONTEST Multi Multi 26 Nov 1995 1659z 160 80 40 20 15 10 ALL percent North America 111 124 126 132 125 74 692 12.2 South America 9 15 29 59 64 36 212 3.7 Europe 172 526 1212 1348 686 0 3944 69.4 Asia 4 39 128 374 16 0 561 9.9 Africa 3 17 23 47 31 8 129 2.3 Oceania 4 15 34 50 36 5 144 2.5 CQ WORLD WIDE DX CONTEST -
